OUR STORY

From There to Here

Better Health Acupuncture Care Centre is a division of C.F. Tian Yee Health Inc.

It was founded by Xiuxian(Susan) Liu in 2004. Susan is a member of the Canadian Society of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, and the World Association of Chinese Medicine. Susan graduated from 天津中医药大学 (Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine) in 1986, and had practised in Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Madicine First Teaching Hospital as a general surgeon for over 14 years. During that time, she taught TCM and acupuncture at the Tianjin University of TCM and published innovative papers contributing to the development of TCM and acupuncture using modern technology. She has practised TCM and acupuncture for 25 years. As a surgeon, she firmly believed that treatment outcomes could be improved by combining methodologies of both Western medicine and Chinese Medicine. As an example, treatment for gangrene as result of diabetes are limited to amputation and are poorly controlled using conventional medicine alone, but with the combination of herbal medicine and acupuncture, the affected areas can sometimes be saved. The herb is used to preserve and nourish the damaged tissue and promote local circulation, while acupuncture needles were used to plant skin grafts to the affected area. These grafts are called "seeds" which proliferate to regenerate the lost tissue. In western medicine, techniques like this has only started to form. We now can use lasers to shoot individual skin cells to the affected area although using acupuncture and Chinese medicine, the same technique has been used for a long time with very good results.

Susan Liu also believes that the presentation of the theologies behind acupuncure and TCM are often misguided such that acupuncture and TCM are often regarded as voodoo science. She believes that practising acupuncture and TCM requires solid understanding of science and the rationalities behind acupuncture and TCM are strongly based on human physiology. For instance, TCM practitioners describe the human body as having two brains. Indeed, scientists have found extensive nervous functions in the gastrointestinal tracts and the collection of these peripheral nerves, called the enteric nervous system, can indeed function on its own. Acupuncturists refer to acupoints as set in geographic line on the human body, called the meridians. Stimulation of points along the meridians can affect seemingly unrelated parts of the body. In science, we know that the spinal cord contain sections of nerve bundles that regulate different parts of the body. A patch of skin with sensory stimuli corresponding to the same nerve is called a dermatome. Research also shows that acupuncture may function by stimulating local nerves which results in local and systemic responses. As such, there is more room for science to discover the true meaning in the theologies of acupuncture and TCM. Therefore, it might be a matter of expression that has led acupuncture and TCM to be misunderstood as an alternative to western medicine when it may indeed share the same foundation.

After settling in Kingston, Ontario, Susan started her clinic. Due to her extensive experience and diligence with all of her patients, her patient base has expanded dramatically over the years. She has helped patients with many different conditions such as cancer, infertility, addiction, weight management, pain, insomnia, depression, acne, flu, mobility, amongst others. Susan customly precribes herbal formulas for each of her patients based on individual needs, and treatment plans often include a combination of acupuncture and TCM for best results. The clinic also offers nutritional supplements and a number of health analysis. For more information on what the clinic offers please see the Products and Services page or Contact Us.
